Mr. Varela is also Director of Varela Hermanos, Panama's largest manufacturer and distributor of alcoholic beverages. Mr. Varela has occupied public office in Panama, serving as Vice-Minister of Treasury and Secretary of the Commerce Department of the Republic of Panama. He attended Tulane University and earned an MBA from Instituto Centro Americano de Administración de Empresas (INCAE), a Latin American extension of the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Varela currently serves on councils and advisory boards for a number of institutions within the Republic of Panama.
