Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Canada's dollar rose to its highest since 1960 after the price of crude oil advanced and the country's gross domestic product in August exceeded economists' expectations.

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Gold rose as the euro rallied against the dollar, boosting the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative to the U.S. currency.
Before today, gold had climbed 23 percent this year, reaching a 27-year high of $798.30 an ounce on Oct. 29 as the dollar fell 8.7 percent against the euro. The 13-nation European currency reached a record $1.4467 today. Five of the past six bear markets for the U.S. currency have pushed gold higher.

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil rose 3 percent and neared a record after an Energy Department report showed that U.S. inventories fell to a two-year low. Oil has advanced 14 percent this month.
Stockpiles dropped 3.89 million barrels to 312.7 million barrels last week, the lowest since October 2005, the department said. A 400,000 barrel gain was expected, according to a Bloomberg News survey.

October 31, 2007 Newmont Mining 3Q Profit Doubles on 1-Time Gains, Narrows Gold Sales Outlook on Mine Costs DENVER (AP) -- Newmont Mining Corp., one of the world's largest gold producers, said Wednesday its third-quarter earnings doubled on one-time gains from a joint venture settlement and a tax credit.
However, the company narrowed its gold sale expectations for the year, citing mining costs.
The company earned $397 million, or 88 cents per share in the third quarter, compared with $198 million, or 44 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.
Revenue rose 49 percent to $1.65 billion.

Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Copper rose for the first time in four sessions in New York on speculation demand from China, the world's biggest buyer, will strengthen, further reducing stockpiles of the metal used in wires and pipe.
Demand from China may increase 6 percent next year, the Lisbon-based International Copper Study Group said yesterday. Copper stockpiles monitored by the London Metal Exchange, the world's biggest metals exchange, have dropped 28 percent this year.
